Mother Ocean

Fri Sep 11, 2009, 5:57 AM
I'm feeling very lucky to be alive.

Last Saturday, I went to the beach with friends.
~Caergwydion, ~NaughtyWitchkShaya, and I enjoy swimming out past the breakers. We swam for a while, then went in for a picnic lunch with family.

After lunch, we excitedly went back into the ocean. Before we got noticed, the undertow became stronger and we were swept further out. The first thing that told me we were in trouble was that I couldn't touch the sand with my toes. Then I saw how far from shore we were. When we realised we couldn't fight the ocean's outward pull, we called for help. (This beach doesn't have lifeguards.) Two young men with boogie boards were nearby and fought their way out to us.

I remember them telling us to grip the boards, not let go, and not look back. It took all five of us frantically kicking as hard as we could to get us back to shore. When we were almost there, one of the guys said, "I think you should have footing now." As he said that, another swell rolled by and pulled my feet out from under me.

When we got on shore, we all collapsed in the sand at the water's edge and sat there shaking for many minutes. Our friends on the beach hadn't realised anything was wrong until they realised they couldn't see us.

It was the single scariest day of my life.
I remember clearly thinking, "OMG this is how it's going to end."

So be good to each other and live for today.
:peace: and
